Lightning Lightning photography has been a particular challenge since moving to New Mexico. I'm blessed to live in a location where I have about a 180-degree view from my patio. I've always been fascinated by lightning but grew up in coastal Southern California where lightning storms are fairly rare. Lightning is such a phenomenal display of the raw power of nature. Most summer evenings during the monsoon season, when I'm not otherwise occupied, you'll find me in the backyard, or if the weather is pretty threatening, under the patio, trying to catch the elusive lightning bolts. It's one of the toughest things to photograph, striking a balance between being a human lightning rod with camera and tripod and retreating to safe shelter to avoid being that lightning rod. A photographic competition judge once told me that if there were a "degree of difficulty" awarded in photographic competition, lightning would be right up there at the top.
